A Victory for Law-Abiding Citizens

The US Supreme Court has made it's first major ruling on gun control in United States history and it was good news for the law-abiding citizens of this country who want to protect their homes and families from intruders and violence.

In a five to four decision, the justices ruled that Americans had a right to keep handguns in their homes for protection.

Justice Scalia who wrote the opinion for the majority said that "The Constitution does not permit the absolute prohibition of handguns held and used for self defense in the home."

Of course there will probably be state, local and municipal battles to fight before some cities will allow the ownership of handguns by it's general population, but the highest court in the land has basically said that the ownership and use of guns for protection of one's home is none of anybody's business.

In my humble opinion, this issue of what we do about guns in our homes should never have been in question. It has never made sense to deny a man the right to protect his family, by whatever means necessary.

I am also in favor of concealed weapons permits for law abiding citizens who qualify, and no my dear cherry-pickers, I don't think any one should be able to take a concealed weapon into a bar or night club, although the criminal element sure does it on a regular basis.

If the muggers, burglars, rapists and thugs in this country had to take the chance of coming up against deadly force every time they committed a crime I'd say they'd be less likely to commit them and if a few of them get killed or wounded in the process, it will be only because they asked for it.

Recently in my home county a man discovered three people robbing his brother's house while his brother was away. When the robbers saw him and his gun they took off in a pickup truck. A few well-placed shots by a heavy caliber pistol blew the transmission out of the truck and put the would-be robbers on foot to be picked up by the police shortly thereafter.

Right after Christmas a few years ago, a gunman came through the door of a convenience store in Tennessee with the intentions of robbing it. The kid behind the counter bent down as if to give him the money, grabbed the .357 Magnum he'd just gotten for Christmas and blew a hole in the counter and a hole in the robber.

If you will look, you will find all kinds of stories of decent people carrying concealed weapons being violently attacked and shooting their way out of it much to the dismay of their attackers.

I believe in gun control. Guns are dangerous and should be kept out of the hands of those who would use them for offensive purposes but qualified citizens should be able to own any kind of handgun they like.

And now they can.

Thank you, Supreme Court.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops

God Bless America
