Something's Happening Here

While on the road recently, I got the news that a non-politician businessman won the Republican nomination in Tennessee’s gubernatorial primary elections.

I don’t keep up with the politics of other states enough to know if the same thing is happening to any degree around the country or not, but have heard about enough cases of people running who have never held political office of any kind before, and the election of Donald Trump in 2016, seems to have opened the door to ordinary citizens who have decided to throw their hats in the ring, prior political experience be damned.

In the case of the candidate in Tennessee, he ran against some established politicians, national and local, plus another extremely well-financed first timer and a US congresswoman who had the endorsement of the whole Trump organization.

In the general election, he will again be running against an extremely well-funded and experienced politician and it will be interesting to see just how much the people of the Volunteer State want some fresh faces, unbeholden to the status quo.

I am purposely not using names here, because the crux of this column is not about personalities but a seemingly growing trend in America, admittedly in its infancy, but undeniably gaining momentum, with heretofore unknowns, who have never held office of any kind going up against the party favorites and winning.

And by no means is this movement confined to the Republicans or conservatives as the recent upset in New York, pitting an established veteran Democratic House member against a victorious upstart 28-year-old Socialist even further bears the point from the other side of the spectrum.

It seems that a lot of voters are getting tired of the same old faces, the same old tired, unkept promises and decided to upset the apple cart and heed the words of Donald J. Trumps 2016 campaign statement, “What have you got to lose?”

Both major political parties have long had segments of the voting population they took for granted, the Democrats with the minorities and the Republicans with the elderly and those pockets of America perceived to be solidly conservative.

It seems that is no longer a viable political strategy for either party, as, in just a matter of months, a totally unknown candidate can seemingly come out of the woodwork and present a formidable challenge to even the most embedded member of establishment politicians.

In my humble opinion, this is a good thing and presents a hope that perhaps one day the swamp will actually be drained. It will never happen by any other means because Capitol Hill politicians had rather walk barefoot across hot coals than propose term limits.

Am I expecting a political renaissance with the houses of government being peopled with new faces and fresh approaches?

No, but, as the old proverb says, the longest journey begins with the first step and, if and when those fortunate enough to survive establishment political money and the vitriol and venom of their vicious method of trying to destroy every one and everybody who stands in their way and threatens their hold on power, when and if they let their voices be heard and actually stick to the purposes that got them elected, there could well be a crack in the dam.

It seems that many people are no longer bound by loyalty to political parties and the electorate has become quite unpredictable, as was witnessed by bewildered, bumfuzzled pollsters and disillusioned media partisans in the 2016 presidential election.

The midterms will be a good barometer for just how far and how deeply the “non-professional” politician movement has advanced in our nation, but win, lose, or draw, we have not heard the last of it.

There’s something happening here.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, our police and the peace of Jerusalem.

God Bless America

Dump em All
Amen, Amen & Amen Charlie I say dump em all in favor of business people, the people who built their own business, contrary to what Obama spewed out about they did not build their businesses. I know nothing about the Tennessee elections coming up but I am sure that the good people of Tennessee will make the right choices, Soros and Cuomo's money be damned. I'm rooting for new faces all over the country, even the whore house owner in Nevada running for a state house seat, who has been called the Trump from Pahrump. God Bless them all, let's drain the swamp, and as you have suggested, offer the best ones like Trey Gowdy appointed positions in the government. Let's lock up Hillary, Obama, Lerner, Holder, Lynch and the rest of these crooked cronies whose agenda is contrary to the US Constitution and the good of the free people of America....nuff said God Bless Plowboy

Just more polarization
The left and right grow further and further apart. They want to push the boundaries further. Those people who linger in the middle are viewed as traitors. The 2016 election had less to do with an unpredictable electorate than an all too predictable body of voters less persuaded by reason than by the machinations of a hostile foreign power. Even now, they grab at every reason not to accept the truth though it stands right in front of them. We no longer have an American identity that unites all of us.

sometin's up
As usual Charlie and Plowboy hit the nail on the head but lets hope and pray that there aren't too many "bottom-feeders" like Dana out there that when they're backed in the corner they start wavin' the flag.Hypocrits.

Charlie!
You're as brilliant today as you were when you penned and recorded "Uneasy Rider". Just fascinating, no-bs good stuff. Live forever, ok?

Thank you
And I mean to say, Thank You again! The first thank you is simply the one I say whenever I hear your music. You have always had my respect. Now, I thank you again. Your words are again ringing so true. God Bless you, sir

To Robert
When all you can do is come up with childish names, you lost before you began.

You're right, Charlie
You're absolutely correct, Charlie. Our illustrious Senators and Representatives will never impose term limits on themselves or do any of the other things that need to be done to put this ship back on track because any of those actions would upset their gravy train. The ONLY way we're going to take back our country is via an Article V Convention of States.

Tennessee election
Charlie, I always enjoy reading your tweets and Soap Boxes. As a fellow Tennessean I am proud of our voters for not staying with the status quo! It’s refreshing to see candidates without political agendas having the opportunity to get elected! God Bless America and God Bless Charlie Daniels!!! From your neighbor over in Gallatin

Just want honesty
Myself I'm tired of being lied to by both parties. It's a war zone out there! Folks getting murdered for no reason. Prisons are packed we are more divided than ever. Morals out the window, corruption everywhere you turn. Few fear anything, or value anything, you see it every day on the roads all across this great country of ours. Decent people need to stay up and say enough is enough. Lead by example, or fall as the Romans and so many others have. Love ya C.D. Great post.

Change in motion
So right there is something happening here, not to conjure up the old Buffalo Springfield song but it is. I’m not sure I have watched a degradation of politics over the last forty years – blaming both parties to some degree. But the change I’ve seen culturally and politically is coming from the left in an incremental way. They probably think we don’t notice, unlike an old progressive had hoped. So we care, we're here and we aren't giving up.
