Here We Go Once Again

The recent school shooting in Florida has, once again saddened, frightened and left a bewildered nation looking for answers, answers that are illusive and exasperated by the "quick fix" "one size fits all" rush to judgement of politicians, who are not above trying to capitalize on a crisis, even one as heartbreaking as this one.

And once again we're headed for a crossroads where political correctness, political expediency and common sense collide.

I would like to preface my remarks by stating something I've said so many times before. If it would truly stop the school shootings, the gang violence, the drive-by shootings, the cop murders and all the other horrible killing and maiming caused by guns, I would gladly watch while every gun I own was, by law, ground into powder and dumped in a sinkhole.

But I know, just as sure as I live and breathe that it will not, it would not cause the end to gun violence any more than prohibition put an end to drinking, or the drug laws put an end to drug use.

Why?

Because laws only deter law-abiding citizens and one more or a thousand new laws will not change the hearts of criminals, will not improve the rampant mental illness and drug use. It will not block the radical Islamic recruitment videos, nor dull the effect of the violent, life cheapening video games American children cut their teeth on.

The same characters who search frantically for a bank of television cameras as soon as a tragedy like this happens, and heatedly excoriate guns and all who own them, are the same bunch who are quick to condemn police for approaching anybody until they are charged with a crime, and by that time it is too late.

They claim they are protecting human rights, and all the while, they could be aiding and abetting a potential murderer.

The FBI was told about Nicholas Cruz, who actually informed the world on a YouTube post, that he was going to be a "professional school shooter".

He was known as a cruel, out of control kid in his neighborhood and in his school, where he was expelled. He watched radical videos online and was the quintessential square peg, a powder keg, and was recognized as such by those who were around him.

America is told if you see something say something, but the truth is, much of America is afraid to say something even when they do see something, for fear of being called a racist or that their words will fall on deaf ears.

So where does that leave us and what are we going to do about gun violence?

Simple question.

If every gun that could be located by whatever federal agency tasked with the job, was confiscated, would that end the killing?

I submit to you that it would not end it, but increase it, because criminals, whose guns would not be confiscated and seized would look at the unarmed public as a smorgasbord of opportunity, every house a potential home invasion target, every citizen a defenseless pawn to be robbed, raped or murdered at will.

More background checks?

Myself and every other legal gun owner in the state of Tennessee have gone through background checks and continue to go through another one every time we buy a new gun.

And though I can't speak authoritatively and specifically about all the other states, they all have background checks and requirements for purchasing firearms, some so stringent as to make it impossible to own a handgun.

Does anybody think that as long as instructions for making and detonating a bomb are readily available on the internet, that our schools and streets are going to be safe from nuts like Cruz, or the Tsarnaev brothers, or any other fanatic with enough gray matter to read?

Will our cities be safe from the Timothy McVeighs of the world as long as fertilizer and diesel fuel are manufactured and readily available?

Have you checked the rate of stabbings and knife killings in the UK, a place where guns have been banned for decades?

The point I'm making is that, no matter what is done about guns, whether certain calibers are banned or whether there is a clean sweep and all legal guns are confiscated, it will not stop the violence.

And I submit to you that myself and practically every legal gun owner in this country want to see solutions and are willing to be a part of them, but none of us trust the federal government to do anything meaningful about the problems.

How many statutes and existing laws did Eric Holder break with the Fast and Furious debacle, and yet Obama sealed up the evidence so Holder couldn't be held responsible.

And cities hold silly gun buybacks, where they pay a certain amount of money to those who will turn in a handgun, which, in so many cases, a piece of junk is turned in and the money is used to buy a much better illegal gun.

When you give our government an inch they always take several miles and legal gun owners fear that once they are allowed to embark on this course, increment by increment, they will decimate the rights of all law-abiding gun owners.

That is the reason for the reticence on the part of legal gun owners when it comes to federal involvement. They want answers as badly as any other citizen, but they want meaningful, not cosmetic ones.

I claim no official expertise in solving such tragic and divisive problems, but from view of a common man who operates on blue-collar principles and hard-won experience, I have a few
ground level, horse sense suggestions I'd like to pass along.

First, protecting schools.

My opinion, whatever it takes, metal detectors, adequately armed security to cover the whole building, nobody gets in without being seen and nobody gets out without being seen.

Availability of qualified personnel to confidentiality hear, evaluate and follow up on tips about anybody acting strangely or making threats in conversation or social media.

Clean up the firearms black market, street corner thugs who operate out of the trunk of a car, unscrupulous dealers who knowingly sell to straw buyers who will resell the guns to anybody who can come up with the price.

And yes, it's going to cost, but how could we better spend tax dollars?

There will be the anomaly, those who will slip through the net, the Las Vegas shooter for which no motive has been established and evidently, no prior warning signs were visible, but how he got all those guns and ammunition to a high-rise room without anybody being suspicious is hard to believe.

Somebody had to have noticed, that's way too much hardware to go unnoticed and in the unlikely case that it wasn't, how could a hotel have such lax security to let it slip through even the back way and service elevators?

You have to wonder if some employees had suspicions and were afraid to report them in fear of irritating a guest.

It's usually the little things, those deemed not worth mentioning that, brought to light, can avert bad things.

It's hard to realize that there are those who walk among us every day who are capable of great evil and leave a trail of subtle warning signs behind, visible only to the observant and vigilant.

The times are constantly changing and ordinary citizens, law enforcement, federal agencies, and yes even the lawmakers, federal, state and local must change along with them, providing legislation that will enable those charged with protecting the public with the tools they need to take on this monumental task.

It's going to take vigilance, commitment, money, compromise and leadership and lets all hope that the cooler heads prevail and check their tantrums, hyperbole and prejudicial ideas at the door.

Children should be safe in their schools, people should be able to walk down the street, fly on airplanes and go to mass public gatherings without fear of gun violence.

It's time to pursue answers, to consider all options and be willing to abide by whatever the real solutions may be.

I am.

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, our police and the peace of Jerusalem.

God Bless America

Here we go once again
Charlie, Always appreciate your common-sense down to earth approach to whatever you tackle. I too believe we need to beef up security at our schools. The obvious place to start is by limiting access to school buildings by keeping most doors locked to the outside and the few open doors monitored by people trained and ready to act.

That is the best article I have ever seen on this problem. Every parent in this country and politician for that matter needs to read this. Thanks Charlie,, your the best! And a special thanks for not being a bleeding heart liberal.

Just Shows How Wrong a Person Can Be
As long as people think like Charlie, these massacres will continue. You can only ignore the obvious for so long. It bugs me when people like Charlie wail about the horrors of abortion and the sanctity of human life and then say, "Hey, fellas, slow down and don't rush to judgement," when a mass murder occurs. These are people dying. It has got to stop. And if folks like Charlie are content to look the other way or condemn people for trying to restrict guns, it is not going to stop. All the song and dance about radical Islam and video games and mental illness is not going to make it stop. There is nothing in the Constitution that says people have a right to semi-automatic weapons anymore than they have a right to walk around with a vial of weaponized anthrax. At some point, even Charlie is going to realize things have gone too far. I hope it is soon.

Guns & School Safety
Amen, Amen & Amen Charlie, Background checks will not stop the mass murders. I personally believe that schools are a target because they are gun free zones. First we need to allow teachers and other employees who are willing and able to carry concealed, this will be a huge deterrent to would be shooters, not knowing who is and who is not packing. Second we need to train all students from kindergarten up, how to react in active shooter situations. We need to get rid of all the political correctness and profile people. In closing I must add that we also need to deal with the 3,000 children murdered in the USA every day under the politically correct name abortion. nuff said God Bless Plowboy

Gun Violence
I am a Psych RN for almost 30 years. I think a possible way to help some of these really "sick" people is to do ANNUAL psychiatric assessments at least once a year! This would START in K-5years and be a PRT of their school record. Any "issues" such as violence would result in MANDATORY treatment!šŸ™

zinsmeister, the Second Amendment reads, A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. Wll mister tell me how you can take away semi-automatic guns and INFRINGED does not imply. I believe you meant assault style rifles which should not be infringed, any weapon that is not, single shot, double barrel, bolt action, lever action or revolver is semi automatic. The regulations upon fully automatic should not have been infringed in 1934. We the people who are not felons of violence should be able to own and possess machine guns to protect us and our families from our own government to prevent another holocaust such as the Nazi's perpertuated after coming to power in 1933. Because you brought abortion into your post, would you care to explain your position on abortion? Is not murdering 3,000 babies a day in the US, just as sinful and tragic as the 17 murdered in cold blood last week? nuff said God Bless Plowboy

Bans do nothing for root cause
The core root cause is not the guns, take them away and somone would take the next step with simple gas cans. Those would be much more horrific. The tool used is not the problem, one of the main problems is these nutjob are attention seeking, the press feeds them the info on how to be an instant celebrity with the next high score. Look at how many stories there about this person, every aspect of his life is covered from multipul directions. If you want to break the cycle of attention seekers the press needs to replace is name and picture in every article (with a blue meenie cartoon and deragatory nickname).. on the gun front this guy should have been required to do a psych eval by multipul sources, once somone acts out that way a test should have been required first.. that being said he just would have used another tool.. possibly one that would have been more effective.

Agreed!!
Once again what a fantastic commentary. No gun has ever just jumped up and shot someone. It is the person behind the gun. Until our courts learn to lock up the criminals and get the mentally ill treatment as they need the results will not change. Thank you Mr. Daniels, God Bless

Protecting Gun Rights
Charlie, pointing out that criminals will always be able to get guns, as you just did, is the ONLY thing that will get people to reject gun control. Sadly, when people show support for gun rights, all too often theyā€™ll use other arguments that distract from this important fact that you mentioned. Theyā€™ll defend gun ownership in terms of things like heritage, the wisdom of yesteryear, the liberal agenda, and concern about the government becoming to powerful. Yes, guns are a part of our heritage, but thatā€™s not a good reason to reject gun control. Some say that our yesteryear was wise and virtuous, but thereā€™s a lot of good reason to believe thatā€™s not true. People donā€™t need to worry about the liberal agenda or be conservative in order to be pro-gun. Even though we have the Second Amendment because the founding fathers wanted the citizenry to be more powerful than the government, people are more worried about the here-and-now issues of crime and self-defense. ā€“ Tru Cola

Amen Charlie Daniels. I am a Christian , a patriot , a conservative , and a member of the NRA .America is the last best place on earth . We have a violence problem in this nation , not due to guns , but due to evil . God has been removed from the schools , the public square , and the court house . The family has been destroyed due to broken homes . Our youth are becoming morally bankrupt and left to their own demises . Our Constitution and Bill of Rights are the sacred fabric of our great nation . I am appalled at any politician who threatens Liberty by proposing gun control . The 2nd Amendment needs NO interpretation . It is to keep We The People Free . We must address these evil times by arming our teachers and staff to combat this growing epidemic of evil that is attacking our schools . I hope EVERY Patriot contacts their elected officials and DEMANDS no more assanine gun control . The 2nd Amendment is NON NEGOTIABLE . God Bless America . I will NEVER lay my guns down to no man . We have the God given right to self defense . God bless you Charlie Daniels . You are a Patriot !

Background checks
Charlie states "Availability of qualified personnel to confidentiality hear, evaluate and follow up on tips about anybody acting strangely or making threats in conversation or social media. Clean up the firearms black market, street corner thugs who operate out of the trunk of a car, unscrupulous dealers who knowingly sell to straw buyers who will resell the guns to anybody who can come up with the price. And yes, it's going to cost, but how could we better spend tax dollars?" It sounds like Charlie is ok with background checks and more rigorous enforcement and I agree. In order to accomplish the goals stated by Charlie, the technology needs to be improved such that agencies communicate. Universal background checks can reliably identify people that have a criminal record of violence and there should be severe penalties for any gun dealer that sells a gun and for any person with a criminal record of violence that attempts to obtain a gun.

Do you own a flame-thrower? A bazooka? Would you feel it was an infringement on your rights if someone stopped you from walking down a crowded street with a vest full of explosives? How about a MANPADS? No? Could it be that it is legal for the government to restrict access to weapons that cause mass casualties?
Posted by dana
Yes Dana
Dana, as a matter of fact I do own a flamethrower and it is 100% legal. My brother has machine guns and silencers, all 100% legally registered and with a trust. Dynamite use to have around all the time on the farm, you bought it at the local hardware store, no paperwork involved 50 years ago. We used ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel to blow stumps, dams and wells. Case in point we never killed or target any human being, why? Probably because when we grew up God & prayer was still in school along with corporal punishment. As far as weapons of mass casualties, what about half full gas cans, pressure cooker bombs, pipe bombs, automobiles and semi trucks .....nuff said God Bless Plowboy

adam, I donā€™t believe that our society was ever loyal to God. Loyalty to God is a choice people make as individuals, not collectively as a nation. Back in the so called ā€œgood old daysā€, most people were Christians just to follow a social norm. Thatā€™s not the true Christian Faith. Throughout history, ā€œChristianā€ nations have been just like the Pharisees from the Bible. We no longer have school prayer because of the way people were before the Supreme Court ruling banning it. -- Tru Cola

Our Neighbors to the South
At the height of the cartel violence in Juarez, Mexico over 5,000 people a year were getting murderedā€”mostly with guns. Hit men looking for one or two guys would spray a shopping mall, a bar, a street and one time even a kidā€™s birthday party with bullets. And that is just one city in Mexico. Btw, guns are illegal in Mexico. The Mexican Revolution was won with guns, so the guys that won that war decided an armed citizenry was a bad thing.

Being wrong is not the same as lying. A person can be completely honest and can still be wrong. I do not ā€˜feel goodā€™ about someone killing high school kids. If you think there is mass slaughter going on any place outside a war zone, the only place is the US. In Florida, we have an A+ governor according to the NRA. Look at what it got us.

I would be perfectly happy to see semi-automatic weapons handled the same way as fully automatic weapons. Licensed and registered. No one has a ā€˜rightā€™ to this stuff anymore than you have a right to a helicopter gunship or a nuclear missile. As long as assault weapons are easy to get, there are going to be massacres. That is common sense and common sense seems to be in short supply these days.

We have always had the politicos that want to screw life up for the law abiding. Now, because of the recent shootings, they are trying to age restrict even video games; as if that will help. I agree that some of the games should never have been made, but others, like "Vice City" actually promote evil and violence. These type of games should have been removed from the shelf years ago, but that would not have changed anything. This will continue until the president himself steps in and makes a Presidential Decree, and has the country behind him. Too long has the population been afraid to answer the door after dark. Too many of our Police officers have faced the wrong end of a gun, I am angry. We need to remove the protections the criminals have and give that protection back to the citizens. In short: We are the ones that pay the salary of the officers, not the thugs. Iys time that the law abiding citizens stand up to the politicians and say with one voice : WE WILL BE HEARD, AND YOU CANT STOP US! WE ARE TIRED OF THE 1 MONTH PRISON SENTANCE FOR RAPE AND NON-VIOLENT CRIMINALS CLOG OUR JUSTICE SYSTEM. I apologize for my rant and I fee; the way most Americans do right now... the system is broken and we are the ones getting hurt, not the crooks. BTW I remember seeing you in New Bern NC Years ago. safe schools
Charlie, Only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. School shooters have one thing in common, they are cowards. These animals head over to the school, hell we go as far as to hang signs on almost every school "gun-free zone" . The signs need to say," Notice we are committed to providing a safe school for all. The staff have been trained to quickly respond with deadly force." Not every teacher needs to carry, hell, the fact that there could be a gun in the hands of trained staff members will stop these scumbags. That's what cowards do when confronted. Offer teachers and support staff training and a firearm at no cost and pay these people well, the govt. is planning on throwing a bunch of money at this problem( 500 million from Florida alone) you could pay these "safety officers" 10 grand a year and still have money for the new signs.

Looking for Warning Signs
Charlie, Iā€™m very much worried that looking for warning signs could lead to a witch-hunt. I think that everyone, from time to time, shows some kind of oddity that can be seen as disturbing. Iā€™m not saying that we shouldnā€™t look for warning signs. Iā€™m just saying that if we do, we should be extra careful, or else weā€™ll end up back in the old days when a lot of peaceful, sane folks got hauled off to the insane asylum just for being a little bit eccentric. -- Tru Cola

Hero with an AR
Dana, Did you here the one about the guy with no shoes who stopped the church shooting in Sutherland Springs,TX? I should mention he had an AR style rifle, an NRA membership, and the correct understanding of Gun Control. "A good eye and a steady hand." 5 nov.2017 Stephen Willefort heard gunfire not far from his home,he took his rifle but not his shoes and ran towards the danger. He gets to the church, puts a couple rounds in the scumbag who then jumps in his getaway vehicle and splits. Mr. Willefort flags down a dude in pick-up, jumps in with rifle in hand, and these two Heroes chase the scumbag until he wrecks. I urge anyone who reads this to go to www.npr.org 1182017 read the whole story. It is not the firearm,or the magazine size,or the pistol grip, it is the intent to do good or to do evil with a firearm, truck,or an airliner. Dana, do you fly? How about you Zinsmeister? Air Marshalls sure have made air travel safe again. Nobody knows who they are or if a Marshall is even on the flight, kinda sneaky don't you think? Since we're talking about sneaky, how about the NRA? Those good ol boys sneak around promoting such crap as, firearm safety, hunting, self-defense and protecting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If there was no mass shooter, there would be no need for anyone to come armed. How safe do I feel now that my state offers some of the easiest access to firearms, Bill? Not safe at all. A little girl a few miles away accidentally killed herself when she tried to get some candy out of grandma's purse and found a loaded gun instead. A guy in a movie theater shot and killed the father of a newborn out on his first date with his wife since the birth because the father was texting his babysitter. One guy shot up a car and killed a teen because they were playing the music too loud at a service station. The NRA runs this state, Bill. They do not give a hoot whether we live or die. They just want the money the right wingers and the gun manufacturers throw at them. You know how much the head of the NRA makes, Bill? Over 5 million a year. I wish they cared about gun safety, Bill. They made sure the government cannot even study the issue. I have a mentally troubled neighbor who walks around the street at night with a gun strapped to his chest. You think that makes me feel safer, Bill? Someone fired a shotgun just outside my property some nights ago. You think that makes me feel safer, Bill? Air marshals are permitted to carry weapons on a plane. How would you feel if everyone could? Would you feel safer, Bill? There is nothing good about the NRA, Bill, not since they got taken over by right wing thugs. I hope we survive the year, Bill. I hope when the next massacre happens here it will not be in my neighborhood or at my kid's school or at the grocery store or the shopping mall. I am glad you enjoy your gun, Bill. I would rather you found a different hobby.

Not a hobby Dana, a lifestyle. (I have more than one gun)
Dana, You must live in one of our major cities. Did you know that the murder rate in the 90's in New York City was near 2000 a year. Across the country, crime has been dropping since the early 90's , at the same time an increase in private firearm ownership and the self-defense laws have led to over 13 million citizens with the right to carry,Scumbags know almost anyone could be carrying "Do I feel lucky, well do ya punk!" Put yourself in the scumbag position, I want to be a big shot, have my name in all the media,I'am going to go to the, let's see,I'll go to the police station and get in a gun battle, hold it,no don't feel that lucky. But at the school there is ONE gun with a coward and I know exactly where he and,all 4000 souls will be at 2:21pm I know the gates will be open, I know I can funnel out of the building unseen,I know that there will be brave people trying to save lives but, without a firearm they don't stand a chance...Why is that so hard for people to understand? The scumbags get it. Our schools do not need to look like armed camps, everyday we put staff and our kids in the line of fire, once again, completely defenseless. We should be ashamed

Look up the instances I wrote about. The toddler who accidentally shot herself lived in North Tampa. The theater shooting took place in Wesley Chapel. The gas station shooting took place in Jacksonville. There was a massacre in Orlando. Now, there is another in Parkland. We have plenty of guns here, Bill. We have a governor who gets an A+ from the NRA and a gun policy dictated by a 78-year old NRA lobbyist. Gun policy is dictated not by police, not by parents, but by the NRA. We have guns, Bill. We need less, a lot less. Imagine if the government handled the opioid crisis this way, making it easier for everyone to have access to the drugs that are killing them. It does not work, Bill. It is not working here. You can dance around the problem anyway you want to. As long as these guns are on the street, this will not stop.

Overlooking the facts
There is a common theme between 2 big gun control arguments- the first is that the same people who argue for more rigorous background checks have never gone through or seen the action of one being processed, and the people who push for gun control/bans overlook the good that guns do and just assume that these shootings are the only thing that guns are used for. Somehwere between 500,000-3,000,000 lives are saved by lawful use of guns in the US per year, per the CDC. Why is this never, ever brought up in any conversation that hold any weight? Is this mass oversight caused by something specific?
