How Very Blessed I Am

The first CDB concert date this year is - as I am writing this - tomorrow night, Saturday, March 11 in Huntsville, Alabama.

Later this morning, I will meet with the rest of the band at the studio for a final rehearsal and a set run through for the sound and light guys, then we'll pack up the instruments and embark on CDB's 46th touring season.

I am 80 years old, have millions of tour miles, thousands of motel rooms and a kazillion memories behind me, but I still approach this year's touring with a seemingly innate excitement and anticipation for the thrill of standing in the wings of a stage, waiting for our theme music and hearing, "Now, from Mount Juliet Tennessee, The Charlie Daniels Band."

I am like an old race horse waiting for the gate to open so I can get out there and do my thing, the same thing I've been doing for sixty years, the thing that never loses its attraction for me, the thing that motivates me to travel 100,000 miles a year and love every minute, the thing I am so thankful to Almighty God for allowing me to make a living doing.

The fact that I get to walk on stage and entertain people with the songs I've written and the talent God has given me. It never loses its luster, its never mundane or ordinary, every show is special and every night is challenging.

I never take for granted the fact that I've been blessed to ply my trade from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon, from Canada to the Mexican border, from the edge of the Arctic Circle to the Down Under Outback of Australia, Asia, Europe, the lonely forward operating bases of Iraq, the grandiose, the humble, through changing times, fad and fashion.

I would not change places with anybody in the world, though I realize there are many more successful, a myriad more talented and multitudes much younger than I am.

I have reached a place in my life and in my career where I am not under pressure from a record label, a management firm, my band loves playing together, my people get along with each other and I dearly love each and every one of them.

In our office, efficiency is routine, a system has been developed and adhered to, there is autonomy when you earn it and guidance when you need it, and always mutual respect.

I simply can't imagine spending my remaining years in a better way than traveling the world with a bunch of people that I love and respect and performing the music we have created.

Is it always easy?

No, its not, it can get very complicated at times, even frustrating if you allow it to reach that point. But I've learned that there are few problems that can't be solved by people who put their hearts into it.

So, when people ask me when I'm going to retire, my standard answer is:

"As long as its God's will and the people want to hear me, I'll be out here doing it."

Still writing new music, exploring new things and always and forever learning.

God, I thank You for allowing me to spend my life doing exactly what I want to do, and for the talent You gave me that enables me to do it.

Lets go to Huntsville, Alabama and do a show, y'all!!!

What do you think?

Pray for our troops, our police and the peace of Jerusalem.

God Bless America

Response
I first saw the Charlie Daniels Band in early 1996 as a new Private and new to the wonders of Texas and its live music scene where I was stationed, my first duty location. I quicky found I was thrust into a wonderous musical landscape and further became a fan of music! In Waco, Texas in May 1996 I attended the 2nd ever concert of my life. It was the Southern Thunder Tour featuring the Marshall Tucker Band, the Charlie Daniels Band, and Hank Williams Jr. After this show I was hook for life on live music. I was just getting into music as I left Tennessee to begin my long 20 year journey with the U.S. Army though back then I had no idea the scope of adventures that awaited me back in my nieve days of 1995. Later that same year I purchased the Charlie DanieIs box set The Roots Remain and got to know Charlie Daniels music a bit better. I saw the CDB again the following year at CountryFest '97 Fruit of the Loom concert at the still unfinished Texas Speedway in Fort Worth, TX(still the hottest weatherwise concert I ever attended) and then saw the CDB again in a nightclub in Temple, Texas in 1998. I left Texas after 3 years and went off to Germany for 3 years, but the music never left my bones. I kept up with it on Armed Forces Network radio, New CD album releases, USO shows, anyway I could. I was in Germany on 9-11 and during that horrible time and the unknown it was the music that got me through. I wouldn't see the CDB live again until Baghdad, Iraq in 2005 where I found myself in the middle of the war zone as a new Sergeant and leader of men. That first deployment of mine to Iraq was the roughest thing I ever went through in my life.. it was the music that helped get me through. I never forgot seeing the CDB in Baghdad and to this day am thankful I was able to be off mission in sector to take a breather and a knee to see them that day. In between my Iraq tours I would see the CDB again this time in upstate New York in 2007 and have a great memorable chat with Taz before a show. Since then I have seen the CDB in Washington state and a few times in Tennessee. I retired from the Army in March 2016 and returned to my beloved Tennessee. I settled in Lincoln County and live just 2 miles from the Alabama border just north of Huntsville, AL. Now days I am a multi decade fan of the CDB and am always greatful when our paths cross and I get to hear the music live again. I lost many friends during my years of service due to combat to include a best friend of mine.. still to this day, it is the music that gets me through. The CDB this year is opening their tour just a few miles from my home and I look forward to seeing them live once again. My last CDB show was the Volunteer Jam last November in Nashville. I am happy I get to see the CDB in Huntsville... Lets do this! See you all tomorrow. SSG Retired Van Booth U.S. Army

A dream come true
Mr. Daniels, tomorrow night I will be one of many attending your first show in Huntsville. I saw you a few years back when you came to Birmingham, and it was incredible. You played "How Great Thou Art" and I closed my eyes and it truly felt like I was at the gates of heaven. I have always been a huge fan. When I turned 16 years old, I got my first car. It was a Jeep Wrangler. In my jeep, I had one CD. It was the Charlie Daniel's Biggest Hits CD. I had that car for 4 years, and not once did I listen to anything but your music. You are a genuine, talented, incredible man of God and that is why you are my hero. Tomorrow night, I get to meet you. My daddy and I are taking a daddy/daughter date to your concert and he has surprised me with joining the VIP Club so that we were able to get a meet and greet with you. Tomorrow night I will get to look at you and smile and all those memories in my jeep with your songs will have a whole different meaning. Tomorrow I get to meet my hero, and I cannot wait. Thank you for doing what you do, and doing it with praises to God. God Bless and take care! Best, Elise Turner

Huntsville Concert
What a great show last night! I loved all of the energy and great songs that that CDB gave us and hope that you felt the love coming right back. Couldn't help but notice that Chris did a heck of a job directing the spotlight. : ) I was happy that I finally got a chance to tell Shannon what a great job he has done on keyboards for the last several years and I loved having each of you spend some time just sharing your fabulous instrumental talents. The William Tell Overture was outstanding! Thanks again for the Soap Box articles, Charlie. You are preaching to the crowd but you have a great way with words and say what so many of us feel. God bless you all and keep you safe on all of your journeys.
